Course Outline

In level 1 of the Bachelor of Commerce you will study eight units, of which three (four if you are required to complete an additional mathematics unit) are compulsory for the degree. In levels 2 and 3 you will specialise in your major areas of study.

There are 12 majors available with the Bachelor of Commerce, catering for a wide range of interests and career aspirations. At least two majors will fit within the three years of study you will undertake. Separate leaflets in this series outline the majors in more detail.

Accounting and Managerial Accounting
Accounting is a very well respected profession which attracts very many capable people each year. It gives you the knowledge to analyse company performance and report it in a way that satisfies the needs of business and the legislative requirements of doing business.

Asian Business
Asian Business will introduce you to the economic, commercial, social and cultural skills that are needed as the basis of a business career in the Asian region, or if you  intend to work in companies with extensive contact and trading relationships there.

The electronic medium is growing rapidly and is the emerging form of business for the new millennium. This major identifies the essential elements of success in managing business using, or totally in, cyberspace.

Good industrial relations is one of the key issues in making an economy competitive. It affects everyone who is at work. If you study industrial relations you will study the way work is organised, the way employees are managed, the role of unions, how cooperation and negotiation can be developed and how conflict can emerge. Having an understanding of industrial relations will help you to be more effective in whatever job you do but will be particularly important if you get into a management position, work for a union, or become involved in industrial law.

Information Management
Management decision making requires knowledge and the ability to transform information into knowledge. Information Management enables you to become proficient in a range of quantitative approaches to making those decisions. It combines well with most other majors to offer a package of skills necessary in today’s commercial environment.

Management
Management gives you an understanding of the functions and development of organisations, interactions with local and international stakeholders, management of people and resources, marketing and the strategic decisions that direct and harmonise all business activities within that organisation.

Marketing
Marketing gives you the skills to take an idea or a product, identify the appropriate market in which to place it and the quantitative skills to put your advertising and PR people on the right track to success. This major gives you the skills to manage and shape the marketing process and to take the lead in market development.

Business Law Minor
A comprehensive Business Law minor is offered to complement the other majors, and to provide the basis for understanding the political implications and imperatives in business. It is an essential area of knowledge that all those in business should possess.
