Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management explores how the proper management of employees contributes towards organisational effectiveness. It will enable you to pursue a career in human resource management or employee relations, a role of increasingly significance within organisations.

The area of study covers the full scope of the human resource role, including planning, industrial law, human performance, industrial relation and strategic aspect of human resource management.

Course Outline

Human Resource Management can be studied as a major in the Bachelor of Commerce. This includes combined courses which include this degree.

Level 1
In level 1 of the Bachelor of Commerce you will study eight introductory business units, three of which are compulsory.

Human Resource Management Major
The major in Human Resource Management presents both the basis of human resource management in theory and research and the practical problems and issues arising in personnel and human resource management in Australia and the international arena. Areas of study include organisational behaviour, industrial law, human resource planning, recruitment and selection, compensation, human performance and performance appraisal, career development, collective bargaining, organisational theory, international personnel management, and strategic human resource management.

Double majors and minors
A second major may be selected from within the Bachelor of Commerce, the Bachelor of Economics, or from programmes within the Faculties of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences or Life and Physical Sciences.

Business Law Minor
There is no Law major available to students within the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. However, a comprehensive Business Law minor is available which complements the other majors, and offers excellent commercial skills. Four units are required to complete this minor.

Duration

Bachelor of Commerce: 3 years full time, up to 10 years part time

The Human Resource Management major prepares students for a career in the human resource function of both private and public sector organisations, and provides a valuable adjunct to other areas of management.

Careers in Industrial Relations offer a varied and exciting work experience in the industrial environment of Australian business and government. Combined with the Human Resource Management major, it puts graduates at the cutting edge of this sector in areas such as enterprise bargaining and work place agreements.
Recent employers of UWA Human Resource graduates include Market Equity, Argyle Diamonds, Perpetual Trustees, Telstra, BHP, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Immigration Department and Royal Perth Hospital.

How do you get in?

Human Resource Management can be studied as a major in the Bachelor of Commerce. This includes combined courses which include this degree.

You must meet the normal entry requirements for the University of Western Australia. Entry is competitive.

Prerequisites:
All courses at UWA: TEE English or TEE English Literature (or ESL for eligible students)
Bachelor of Commerce: any TEE Mathematics (Students with Discrete mathematics will be required to study additional Level 1 mathematics units)
